UKA yesterday announced the full team for the forthcoming European Youth Olympic Trials (EYOT) in Moscow on 21-23 May, including Victoria Ohuruogu (coach: Lloyd Cowan) younger sister of 2008 Olympic 400m gold medallist Christine.

Ohuruogu, who stepped up from 300m to 400m this year and proceeded to win the Aviva England 400m indoor U20 Championships, will travel to the Russian capital, as part of a 22 strong team, to compete in the trials which will act as qualification for the IOC Youth Olympic Games (YOG), in Singapore 14-26 August.
Annie Tagoe (coach: Connie Henry, Clarence Calendar), who will contest the 100m, received the SPAR outstanding achievement award at the 2009 UKA Awards Dinner after winning both the 100m and 200m at the England U17 Championships in Bedford.

Pole vaulter Katie Byres (coach: Julien Raffalli- Ebezant) had a great start to 2010 breaking the British All-Time U17 record once indoors and twice outdoors. She set a new personal best of 4.03m at the McCain Young Athletes League meeting in Blackpool and now the 16 year old is in sixth position on the UK senior rankings.

Javelin duo Freya Jones (coach: Bill Bushnell) and Matti Mortimore (coach: Esa Utrianinen) have both impressed early on in their careers. Mortimore broke the British under-15 javelin record five times in 2007 and was the youngest athlete to be included on the World Class Performance Programme while Jones won the England U17 Championships, finished top of the UK under-17 rankings and fourth in the senior rankings in 2009.

Georgia Peel (coach: Mick Woods) was ranked first for U17 3,000m in 2009 following an international win at the World School Games in Doha, Qatar. She recently finished second in the Virgin London Mini Marathon over 3,000m and will race over 1,000m against her international peers in Moscow.

Jo Jennings, UKA Team Leader said:

“We are delighted to now announce the full team selection of 22 under18 athletes for this inaugural Youth Olympic competition.”

“Selections have been made to take a competitive team to the trials in Moscow, with the aim of qualifying as many athletes through to the final in Singapore as possible, representing Team GB – an exciting prospect and unique experience only two years out from London 2012.”

American 100m record holder and 2007 triple World champion Tyson Gay says he will use both of Britain’s IAAF Diamond League events, this summer, to maintain his assault on Usain Bolt’s dominance as king of the track.

Gay, who is one of 14 IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors, will contest the 200m at the Aviva British Grand Prix held at Gateshead International Stadium on 10 July, and the 100m at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on 13 and 14 August.

He said: “Being a Diamond League Ambassador is a huge honour for me and I’m really looking forward to returning to Gateshead for the Aviva British Grand Prix. With no major worldwide championship this year, the Diamond League will be the biggest thing in track and field. I always enjoy competing in Britain, and I’m happy to see they have two Diamond League events.”

Injury hindered Gay’s performance at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but he returned to world-class form last year and earned himself the title of ‘World’s Second Fastest Man’ after his blistering performance in Berlin, where he ran a national record, and then a month later equalled Usain Bolt’s former World record of 9.69 seconds.

The Kentucky-born sprinter has continued his blistering form into 2010; earlier this month he ran 44.89secs in Florida, in the 400m, which made him the first man in history to dip under 10secs in the 100m, under 20secs in the 200m and under 45secs in the 400m.

UKA and the London Marathon today announced a funding partnership which will further enhance the successful UKA Endurance Programme and help to produce world class British distance athletes.

London Marathon have agreed to an annual investment up to £150,000 which will be added to UKA’s existing significant investment into the Endurance Programme, which has been developed over the past year under the leadership of Ian Stewart.

The funding will be used to help finance altitude training camps in Iten, Kenya and Font Romeu, France, both established altitude training centres which are proven to have physiological benefits for endurance athletes. Font Romeu has long been the European base for Paula Radcliffe, whilst Iten is host to many of the world’s leading distance athletes.

UKA Chief Executive Niels de Vos said: “The mutual expertise in endurance running will form a successful partnership and make a significant impact on endurance running by giving British athletes access to a programme perhaps unrivalled in Europe. London Marathon’s involvement in projects such as this and the laying of Olympic track at the UKA National Performance centre at Lee Valley shows their commitment to the sport.”

UKA Head of Endurance Ian Stewart said: “This is a great opportunity for British Endurance running, enabling us to access altitude training for almost 12 months of the year and will be the first time British Endurance has been able to do this which makes it a major step forward for us.

“Our current junior athletes and the next generation will be able to take advantage of this at a very early stage in their careers which will be most beneficial for their future success. I’d like to thank London Marathon for their vision and partnership in this project.”

Dave Bedford, Race Director of the London Marathon, said: “One of the London Marathon’s founding aims was to help improve the overall standard and status of British endurance running. Over the years it has provided the stage for some outstanding performances from British athletes such as Paula Radcliffe and others. We welcome this opportunity to provide further help to British endurance running by funding altitude training facilities for Britain’s current and future world class athletes.”

Today Bolt has confirmed that he will be present at the Belgacom Memorial Van Damme for what will become one of the most exciting track races in the world in 2010.

In the 2009 World Championship final in Berlin, Bolt, Gay and Powell won gold, silver and bronze in the fastest 100m in history. Bolt set a new World record, while Gay became the fastest ever American athlete at the distance. All three are IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors and they will gather in Brussels for a rerun of this magic final.

Bolt set the meeting record of 9.77 in Brussels in a duel against Powell (9.88) in 2008. The Jamaicans faced a headwind of -1,3m in that race. In 2009 Bolt ran an astonishing 200m in 19.57 in Brussels, the fourth fastest time in history. Against Gay and Powell the fastest human being on earth faces the toughest imaginable threat in the King Baudouin Stadium.
