My London Marathon Challenge – Part 1

Granny Ogg 6 weeks ago I started to prepare for my biggest sporting challenge running the 2014 London Marathon. I know it’s early and many people haven’t had their places in the race confirmed but I am lucky enough to have secured one of my athletics club places (hopefully).

There are many reasons for me taking on this challenge these include getting fit again, I’ve always wanted to do the London Marathon etc…

The main reason I am doing this race is to raise money and awareness for two very special charities; The Royal British Legion and CLIC Sargent.

On the 20th December 2012 I lost my Granny Ogg someone who I was very close too and who inspired me to achieve all I could in my life. Granny Ogg was part of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during the Second World War and as a highly skilled radio telegraphist and worked punching messages onto tapes at Bletchley Park. Her skills as a hand Morse code operator were then used to relay messages behind the lines during D day.

Throughout her life she was a supporter of the Royal British Legion and I want to continue this support in her memory.

Earlier this summer I found out that a close friend had been diagnosed with Leukaemia and was receiving support from CLIC Sargent during their treatment. CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. They provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support.

It was a shock to find out someone so young, fit and active was suffering with this horrible illness; that it inspired me to do something to help them and everyone else who is fighting bravely against cancer.
I thought running 26.2 miles will be hard but it is nothing compared to what these young people are going through and hopefully it will raise some much needed funds for the charity.

OK that’s it for part 1 but don’t worry in part 2 I will tell you all about how the training is going and what I’ve been up to on my training runs and my races!!!. I might even share some interesting things I have seen (I can hope!!!)

Ashford Leisure Trust Sprints and Jumps Competition

Ashford Leisure Trust is running there first open Sprints and Jumps athletics competition at the Julie Rose Stadium on Wednesday 19th September 2012. The competition will include 100m and 200m races run with the wind behind, plus Pole Vault and High Jump competitions.

Walk/Jog 4 Life – Groups

Ashford Leisure Trust is starting some beginners walking and jogging groups to encourage people to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Whether you need support and motivation to start exercising, or you’re interested in doing something different, these sessions could be just what you’re looking for.

The sessions last 45mins and will include a full warm up and cool down and are led by a qualified coach.

Walking and Jogging are a great form of physical activity that can be fun and sociable as well as fantastic for developing fitness levels.

The sessions will run on a Monday at The Julie Rose Stadium (10.45 to 11.30am) and on a Tuesday at Kingsnorth Receation Centre (12.00 to 12.45pm) and will cost

Ashford Leisure Trust – October Half Term Cross Country Coaching

Ashford Leisure Trust is running a cross country coaching morning on Wednesday 26th October 2011 from 9.30am to 12.30pm in lovely grounds of Godinton House & Gardens. The morning session will involve expert coaching in endurance running and will include activities to develop race tactics, pacing and sustained running over a cross country course. The course will involve running on grass and you could get muddy so please bring a spare pair of clothes.

Kent On Track Athletics Series starts with a ‘Bang’

On Track Athletics hosted the first of the new OTA series events at the Marlowe Academy track in Ramsgate. 120 athletes from Thanet AC, Ashford AC and Connect Squad took part in the event which provided U11 and U13 athletes the opporunity to take part in track and field events as part of a friendly yet competitive environment.

Justiming provided electronic timing and Thanet AC hosted the event. The finale of the series takes place at The Julie Rose Stadium on 14th September, where team and individual prizes will be presented.

Kent On Track Athletics Series all ‘Set’ to go!!

The Kent On Track Athletics series kicks off tonight at the Ramsgate Track at The Marlowe Academy. The series supported by the Kent Athletics Network is for young athletes in the U11 and U13 age groups; with over 120 athletes entered the first competition looks set to go off with a bang.

On the track all races will be electronically timed by the UKs premier timing company Justiming. The event starts at 6pm and should finished by 8pm.

Ashford Summer Aviva Star:track Course

Ashford Leisure Trust is running two week long athletics coaching courses for young people aged 7 to 16 years in August at The Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford.

The courses will involve expert coaching and competition in a range of athletics events including running, jumping and throwing.

Each participant will recieve a Aviva Star:track goodie bag and t-shirt.
