Lee McConnell on Laura Muir

Lee McConnell believes Hampden heartbreak five years ago and a growing sense of maturity will allow Laura Muir to cope with being the face of Scottish athletics.

Middle distance specialist Muir won an unprecedented Double Double at the European Indoors in Glasgow earlier this month as she successfully defended her 1500m and 3000m titles in fine style on her home track at the Emirates Arena.
The pressure was intense on the adopted Glaswegian – the 25-year-old has lived in the city for almost eight years – as the home favourite, event Ambassador and poster girl for the host GB and NI team.

Muir now insists she regards raised expectations as support rather than pressure and has her own high hopes for the IAAF World Champs in Doha this autumn and then the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.And McConnell, who qualified for the Olympics three times in her own track and field career, feels Laura can take the strain.

‘I am really impressed with the way Laura is handling the spotlight,’ said McConnell.

STUNNING GOLDS BY MUIR & OSKAN-CLARKE LEAD BRITAIN TO BEST EVER HAUL AT EUROPEAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The final evening of action at the European Indoor Championships saw a record Great Britain & Northern Ireland team deliver spectacularly as golds from Laura Muir (coach: Andy Young, club: Dundee Hawkhill), Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) led the way. Winning six medals on the night, the British team finished the Championships second in the medal table with a best-ever haul at the event of 12 overall (4 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze).

AVIVA GREAT BRITIAN & NORTHERN IRELAND TEAM FOR GLASGOW

UKA_RGB UKA yesterday announced the diverse starting line-up that will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the forthcoming Aviva International Match at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on 30 January.

The seventeen-strong team will face tough opposition from teams representing USA, Sweden, Commonwealth Select, and Germany at the highly anticipated event which marks the beginning of the indoor season.

With more than half the team enjoying a successful World Championship campaign in Berlin last August, including three medallists, GB&NI pose a real threat to their overseas competitors who they may meet again at the World Indoor Championships, in Doha, Qatar from 12-14 March 2010. (more…)
