Disqualification – the cruel fate of race walkers who get it wrong

In my previous article about race walking, I briefly talked about the threat of disqualification. It is one of the main things that makes the event so exciting and dramatic to watch. It can happen for different reasons but the effect is catastrophic for an athlete and their supporters. But after a while, it will happen to almost every experienced race walker.

In any walking race, there are official judges positioned along the course to ensure that athletes are complying with the definition of race walking – namely that at least one foot is in contact with the ground and that the leg is straight when it is on the ground and in front of the body. (This is Rule 230, which I mentioned last time.) Here is a brief explanation:

Ashford Leisure Trust – October Half Term Cross Country Coaching

Ashford Leisure Trust is running a cross country coaching morning on Wednesday 26th October 2011 from 9.30am to 12.30pm in lovely grounds of Godinton House & Gardens. The morning session will involve expert coaching in endurance running and will include activities to develop race tactics, pacing and sustained running over a cross country course. The course will involve running on grass and you could get muddy so please bring a spare pair of clothes.

On Track Athletics Series Finale

Three clubs/teams were represented at the second and final fixture of the On Track Athletics Series at the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford.

The competition was part of a pilot programme from the Kent Athletics Network which was put in place and funded by England Athletics to create new opportunities for athletes, coaches and officials and develop the sport locally. New U13 athletes were given the opportunity to compete in regular track and field events and U11s took part in events such as Vortex Mega Howler, standing triple jump and 75m sprint. All track races were electronically timed by Justiming.

After the first fixture hosted by Thanet AC, there was all to play for with competitions for U11 girls, U11 boys, U13 girls and U13 boys.

Medals were presented to the top performances in each age group and event, as well as team trophies. The final standings were:

Ashford Summer Aviva Star:track Course

Ashford Leisure Trust is running two week long athletics coaching courses for young people aged 7 to 16 years in August at The Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford.

The courses will involve expert coaching and competition in a range of athletics events including running, jumping and throwing.

Each participant will recieve a Aviva Star:track goodie bag and t-shirt.

On Track Athletics – Support Ashford AC Pole Vault Stars

On Track Athletics is pleased to announce it is supporting six pole vaulters from Ashford Athletic Club to be able to go warm weather training in Portugal and receive medical support.

The squad flew out to Portugal on Wednesday 6th April for ten days of specialist training with one of the UKs best Pole Vault Coaches Derek Laws and will receive medical and biomechanical support paid for local athletics clubs and On Track Athletics.

Funding recently awarded to Ashford Athletic Club has been used to provide new sports equipment for athletes who are members of the Ashford Alligators Athletics group, which provides coaching and competition for disabled youngsters. Funding has also be secured for coach development activities to help raise awareness and understanding of working with athletes with disabilities/special needs such as attending specific courses and conferences.

“The club has had several success stories with disabled athletes namely Candy Hawkins, Vicky Silk and Paralympics Medallist Jonathan Ward who attended four Paralympics games.” Commented Alligators coach Peter Le Rossignol. “This new equipment and funding for coach development will really help us support the next generation of potential Paralympians.”

Ashford Athletic Club is currently the only Kent athletics club with a specialised disability section. The Alligators is open to any young person with a disability aged 9 to 17 years old. The club offers a fun introduction to sport with a focus on athletes but will include other sports All activities are led by highly experienced and qualified club coaches and offer close supervision to those attending (numbers are limited to 15 participants per session and must be booked in advance.

Off Track & Running – Cross Country Coaching Sessions

Ashford ‘Athletics 365’ – Introduction to Athletics Course

On Track Athletics in partnership with Ashford Athletic Club and the Kent Athletics Network are running an 8 week introduction course to athletics. The 8 week course is open to any young people in school years 5, 6 or 7 and will take participants through a series of athletics based exercises and activities to ensure they the basic fundamental skills required for sport.

The course is part of a national pilot of the England Athletics

Givaudan 10K and Children’s Fun Run – Sunday 10th October
