Wayde van Niekerk won Olympic gold in Rio 2016 with a world record time of 43.03 seconds, breaking Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old record. What made the run even more remarkable was that van Niekerk ran the entire race from lane eight — usually considered the most disadvantageous position — and never saw another runner for the full 400 metres.
